Vladimir Aronovich Lipets
Russian School • Born 1952, Russia
Vladimir Aronovich Lipets is a Russian painter and Associate Professor in the Department of Painting at the St. Petersburg Academic Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture named after I. E. Repin. Born in 1952, he received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Repin Institute, graduating in 1976 from the monumental painting workshop of A. A. Mylnikov—one of the most influential figures of the late Soviet academic school.
Lipets became a member of the Union of Artists of Russia in 1979 and has been an active participant in Russian and international exhibitions since 1975. Over the course of his career, he has completed numerous monumental commissions throughout the former Soviet Union and has developed a devoted clientele in Russia, Western Europe, and the United States. His paintings are represented in major museum collections, including the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the Museum of the History of St. Petersburg, and regional art museums in Perm, Serpukhov, and Solovki. His works are also held in private collections in the United States, Italy, Germany, England, Norway, Sweden, Finland, South Korea, and China.
Lipets maintains both an apartment and a studio on Vasilievsky Island in St. Petersburg, where he continues to paint and teach. In addition to his academic post, he mentors a small number of private pupils each year. A recurring theme in Lipets’s work is the intimate dialogue between the artist and the model; many of his paintings depict this dynamic directly, capturing both the act of painting and the relationship unfolding within the studio. This reflective, narrative quality has become one of the hallmarks of his artistic voice.
